Carbon Brushes (Oct 2009): Brush Slot Bar Burning

October 30, 2009

Bar burning is the erosion of the trailing edge of the commutator bar indicated by alternating dark and light bars. Certain factors can cause the burning including electrical overload, incorrect neutral setting, improper interpole strength and contamination. If not corrected by resurfacing, this condition may cause commutator damage or a flashover.
